Hii community! I’m reaching out to ask if you might have any insights into what is currently happening within the biohacking community. Are there any active grassroots labs or initiatives you’re aware of, or are there people still engaged in this kind of work? I’ve found it quite challenging to track down spaces that were active a few years ago but seem to have since disappeared.
My name is Nina, and I am PhD in anthropology, currently working on a project exploring the contemporary biohacking movement. I’m particularly interested in human interactions with bacterial cells — in all their forms and complexities.
Any information about ongoing projects, labs, or collectives — especially those working at the intersection of biotechnology and microbiology — would be incredibly helpful for my research. Anyone? <3
I’m based in Poland, so my initial plan was to conduct research primarily in Europe. However, it seems that many spaces are no longer active. So far, I’m in contact with TOP Lab in Berlin and BioQuisitive in Melbourne, and I’m still mapping out other initiatives and connections.
I’m genuinely open to learning about different spaces and projects, so I really appreciate you getting back to me.
Best, N
Also, HTGAA has many people from the global biohacking scene.
In Berlin, you should also meet the nice people from Art Laboratory Berlin, they can also help you to connect to more european or global spaces and people.
And if you come to Japan, please visit us at BioClub Tokyo and/or metaPhorest.
Oh! So many great recommendations — thank you! Wow, especially for sphere.diy — I hadn’t heard about it before, only diybio.org — but most of the places listed there seem to no longer be active. I’ll definitely look into the suggestions you shared!
I truly appreciate it, and I would love to visit BioClub Tokyo and metaPhorest if I have the chance to come to Japan. It sounds incredibly exciting, and I’m really curious to learn more about your work and the community there.
